> FSW Multiplayer Event, Bush Hops in Washington

post Apr 9 2009, 07:17 PM

Next Saturday (April 18th), we will be doing some bush hops in the mountains of Washington. After a string of long hauls, some requested some shorter flights for those of us who don't enjoy staring out a window at water for 10 hours. Flying Pie provided us with an excellent flight, zig-zagging through the mountains from Doc Ridge airport to Tom Saddle. The approximate time that the flight will take is 3-4 hours. You don't have to stay for the entire flight, even if you come and participate in 2 or 3 legs, it would still add to the event. wink.gif

Scenery

The scenery is not optional, and must be installed to do the flight. I have provided information to get you up and flying as fast as possible.

First, you will need to download and install Holger Sandmann's US North Cascades Mountains and Northwest Washington Coast addon mesh, which has a file name of us_wa_nc.zip at http://www.avsim.com/. View the readme included in the instructions for any help.

After this is installed, download North Cascades Bush Airstrips packages 1-3 from http://www.avsim.com/. File names are:

n_cascades.zip
n_cascades2.zip
n_cascades3.zip

After this is done, you are ready to go flying! smile.gif

Aircraft

While most of us have our own special single engine aircraft, some of us are looking for something new. If you need a new ride for the flight, check out Carenado (payware), Rick Piper's excellent freeware DeHavilland Chipmunk (chipmunk2004.zip at http://www.avsim.com/), and Bill Lyons wonderful freeware Piper Tripacer, available at Simviation. These are only a fraction of the many wonderful aircraft to choose from, but it would be impossible to list them all here. tongue.gif

Connecting

For help connecting to the Flightsimworld Multiplayer Server, IP address 64.85.160.87, check out these two topics.

Connecting FSX to an FSHOST game

It would be appreciated if your aircraft choice cruised anywhere from 80-120 knots so we can stay in a group. Also, if you arrive at an airport before others, please wait there for everyone else before continuing on the next leg of the flight. The route will we will fly is shown here:

Navigation will be done by direct GPS.

We will depart at 1900 Zulu time, (2:00 PM Central US time, 12 noon US Pacific Time, 3:00PM US Eastern Time). We hope to see as many people as possible there! smile.gif

Oh yes, I forget to mention: the airstrips are dangerous, with sloped, dirt runways that are very short, bordered by trees and located on mountain sides and in valleys. Be sure to bring something with decent STOL ability. tongue.gif

Maule Time, I should be able to be there. That is the weekend the floors are being redone in our other house, but I should be able to come.

It may be a bit slow, but it could definitely get in and out of the air strips. smile.gif

I'm sure most of you have seen these if you browse these forums a lot, but if not, here ya go. These are probably among the hardest strips in the package; I was in a 206, and I really don't reccomend anything bigger than it (206 even has trouble with some of these but it manages). The scout will be perfect, the cub will be okay although you may lag behind a bit, and the 172 will even work with some practice. Hope to see a big turnout.

I'll put together some tips and some NOTAMs before the event so you're not going into the strips totally blind.

I've checked out some of the strips but I'm having a problem. When starting at an airport, pretty much any airport in that package, my plane falls off the mountain like right away. Has anyone else encountered this?

I'd reccomend starting at a default FS airport and then flying or slewing to the strips. I never installed the AFCADs so they don't show up in my menu, I just start at a nearby airfield and fly to the strip I want to go to. That brings me to another point; I'd like to start at Skykomish so we don't miss out on the approach into Doc Ridge, since that's a pretty fun one to fly into.

and ANOTHER point: you need the AFCAD for Pancake Field no matter what. It's got a paved runway and I've tried landing there without installing it, you fall into the mesh about midfield. So if you don't install any of the AFCADs, at least install the KPCK AFCAD.

I haven't experienced this. hmmm.gif My only suggestion is make sure the wa3, wa4, wa5 have a higher priority than the mesh file.

Don't you think we should just install all AFCAD's? For those of us who don't know the area, how will we navigate? That, and the route I posted requires the AFCAD's.

But yes, we can start from Skykomish, and fly to Doc Ridge before starting the rest of the hops.

I found all of the airports using VFR nav; I looked at the chart that's provided with the packages and compared the terrain with what I was seeing. It's a fun way to navigate, but it just depends on what everyone wants to do. In the event we oughta be able to follow the leader anyways, so either way it shouldn't be a problem.
